English baseball shrugs off the cold, and Malden

LYNN — On a winter-esque night at Fraser Field, the Lynn English baseball team provided plenty of entertainment in a 13-0 (5 innings) win against Malden.

Malden learned the hard way: If you give the Bulldogs free bases, they’ll make you pay.

Good teams get off to good starts. Two errant throws to first base from Malden allowed both Eldrian Bonilla and Jariel Benzan to pick up RBI hits, resulting in a 2-0 lead for the hosts.

The Bulldogs showed their offensive firepower the next inning. After three consecutive singles from Benzan, Kenry Manzanillo, and Gilbert Galva, the bases were loaded for Mateo Rodriguez.

Rodriguez waited for his pitch before crushing one to the outfield, bringing all three of his teammates home for a 7-0 cushion.

Still in the same inning, the bases got loaded up again. After some patience at the plate, Malden’s pitcher walked three straight batters to increase English’s lead to 10-0.

English scored 10 runs in the third inning, but that didn’t stop the Maroon and White from playing defense. The ‘Dogs continued to hustle for every ground ball and pop fly.

The Bulldogs’ mound was split between Alijah Wallace (3 innings), Wilfredo Perez (1), and Guilmer Galva (1). Wallace earned the win and threw two strikeouts, while Perez (1 strikeout) and Galva (3) followed in relief.

Not only were their bats, well, scorching hot, but the Bulldogs showed their speed around the bases. Rodriguez led in the stolen base category, swiping two.

English’s next game is Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. at Revere.
