SALEM — In the city’s mayoral election Tuesday, voters chose Dominick Pangallo, who has spent much of the last decade as chief of staff for former Mayor Kim Driscoll.
Pangallo received 52.4 percent of the vote. His opponent, former mayor and current Salisbury Town Manager Neil Harrington, received 47.6 percent. Following his win Tuesday night, Driscoll introduced Pangallo to his supporters at Salem Hotel on Essex Street.
“Nobody else worked harder, nobody took this seriously, nobody wanted to make sure they connected all of the communities and neighborhoods in Salem,” Driscoll said. “All of you are part of that effort that made it happen, and what a sweet victory it is.”
Pangallo thanked his supporters, and noted the issues he hopes to focus on during his time as mayor.
“I was proud to be the sustainability and working-families candidate, and I will be proud to be the sustainability and working-families mayor,” Pangallo said.
Pangallo previously served as chair of the Neighborhood Improvement Advisory Council and Retirement Board. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Pangallo also served as the city’s public information officer, aiding testing and vaccination efforts.
Pangallo said he ran for mayor to make certain the city remains running on “professionalism, not politics,” according to his campaign’s website.
“I’m running to keep Salem moving forward for everyone, and I’ll be ready on day one to continue that work,” Pangallo said in a statement.
