In their respective conference meets this past weekend, the track and field teams of Lynnfield (Cape Ann), St. Mary’s and Bishop Fenwick (Catholic Central), and Peabody (Northeastern) put on a show for their – in some cases – traveling fans.
The Lynnfield boys track team competed in Newburyport Saturday, scoring 35 points to finish sixth overall. The team will compete at the Division 5 state meet this week in Norwell.
Cape Ann League champion Chase Goldberg finished first in javelin with a throw of 152-4. Quinn Hardisty followed with a 147-1 in second place, while Gavin Fair snagged fifth with a 132- 10.
Joey Cucciniello impressed in triple jump with a fourth-place finish (41-4), while Eli Mendese snagged third place in high jump (5-8).
Ethan Downey finished fourth in shot put (40-7) and sixth in discus (121-7), and the 4×100 relay team of Anthony Attubato, Cucciniello, Zahir Mitchell, and Dillon Reilly placed sixth (46.76).
In the Catholic Central meet, St. Mary’s boys placed second as Kyle Kwiatek was named the meet’s Most Valuable Player of the mile and 2-mile. He also anchored the 4×800 alongside Jesse Moriello, Matheus Menezes, and Matt Terrien.
Brett O’Brien (high hurdles, 2nd) and Jesse Moriello (400 hurdles, 2nd) placed through the air in their respective hurdling events. The 4×100 team also won, setting a new season best from Brandon Cruz, Will Ross Peña, Dylan Moroney, and anchor Anthony D’Itria.
Matheus Menezes Avendanha took sixth in the 800m, while Hakeem Akande recorded a personal best in the 400m to take seventh place.
On the girls’ side, the Spartans placed fifth with strong performances coming from Kelsey Kwiatek (mile, 4th), Tina Amin (200, 3rd), and Nina Lopes (2-mile, 4th). Yomary Nunez snagged eighth in the javelin with a “major” personal best, according to coach Tristan Smith.
As for Fenwick, the Crusaders finished sixth in boys and second in girls competition. Taylar Carafa placed first in the hammer throw, while McKenna Leaman snagged second in both discus and shot put.
Alex Morgan took second in the mile (5:33.34), as did Julia Davis in the 800m (2:27.50) and Celia Krouse in the 400m (1:04.09).
Over in Peabody, the Tanners got it done as both the boys (171 points) and girls (155) won the NEC meet. Better yet, it came with two school records: Aaliyah Callahan (discus, 117-8); Lindsey Wilson (triple jump, 36-8).
Logan Tracia won both the 2-mile (9:51.75) and 800m (2:01.46), Sarah Divasta took the mile (5:24.41), and Wilson also snagged the 100m hurdles (15.26). Savanna Vargas won the 100m (12.27), as did Justin Franco (11.06).
