SAUGUS — An overflow from the sanitary sewer system was discovered flowing into surface waters near the intersection of Ballard Street and Eastern Avenue at 1 p.m. Monday, according to a town public advisory.
As of 1:30 p.m. the discharge had ceased. The overflow likely consists of untreated or partially treated sewage and waste, according to the public advisory.
The notification went on to say that residents should avoid contact with affected waterbodies for 48 hours following the contamination due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants.
The advisory also said residents can visit saugus-ma.gov/public-works for more information on whether specific resource areas, such as water recreation areas, are affected.
