Team of the Week – Marblehead softball

Joey Barrett

May 22, 2023 by Joey Barrett

You know what I’ve been thinking? When you outscore your two opponents 24-1 just two days apart, that’s nothing to scoff at. Marblehead’s softball team saw Winthrop and Swampscott on its schedule and decided to make that happen.

Before we even get to the scores and stats, Marblehead coach Jonathan Gold does a very, very good job at getting production down the lineup. In the exchanges we’ve had this season, he never points to one or two girls who were responsible for a win – but, rather, six or seven.

In Wednesday’s game against Winthrop, Marblehead smoked the Vikings 12-0. Back to the above point, it’s not like one or two players were responsible for a dozen runs. Isabel Mortensen, Luka Bornhorst, Eve Walton, and Sophia Hallisey all went home with multi-hit games, and hard-hitting Anna Bobowski contributed with an RBI smack for run number 12.

Fast forward two days, and the Magicians did it again – this time against Swampscott in 12-1 fashion. Mortensen kept her hot bat intact, going 3-for-4 while her teammates, Hallisey and Walton, each went 2-for-4.

And talk about a highlight. Tessa Andriano – returning from an ankle injury – made an impressive play in foul territory to pick up an out. She also grabbed herself an RBI-double to deep center field.

All that said, winning baseball games starts with throwing strikes. Well, Ruby Calienes struck out 11 against Winthrop and 10 against Swampscott – all while allowing just six hits across her two outings. At the plate, the do-it-all Magician went 2-for-4 against the Big Blue.

To the ever-so-versatile Magicians, good week.
