The Lynn English softball team (10-10) defeated Swampscott 6-5 in the consolation game of the John Holland tournament Sunday. With coach Ashley Aldred helming the program, the win punched English’s ticket to the Division 1 state tournament – the Bulldogs’ first trip there since 1999.
“Quite an accomplishment for Coach Ashley Aldred and the girls,” English athletic director Dick Newton said.
Kate Johannson, Jari Perez, Ariana Reynoso, and Arianna Laboy all played well offensively for English.
SOFTBALL
St. Mary’s 13
Lynn Classical 1
The St. Mary’s softball team (19-1) captured the Holland title with a 13-1 victory against Lynn Classical (12-8). The win marked the most successful season in program history.
Michaela Walker was named MVP of the tournament, going 2-for-3 with two RBI Sunday. Brooke Moloney (all-tournament team) registered two triples, Gabby Maricha roped three hits for two RBI, and Anna Fringuelli (11 strikeouts, 2 hits allowed) threw a complete game.
Lynn Classical 9
Swampscott 6
Lauren Wilson broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with the bases loaded. Her three-run triple was all the Rams needed in their 9-6 win against Swampscott Saturday.
Wilson was 2-for-3, Maddie Meagher had two RBI, Nevaeh Eth had two doubles and an RBI, and Rachel Dana played well in relief (4 strikeouts) to earn the win.
BASEBALL
Lynn English 10
Swampscott 6
In consolation action, English defeated Swampscott 10-6 in the Doug Mullins tournament. Things were tied 4-4 in the fifth, but the Bulldogs put together some runs and never looked back Saturday.
With each team sporting seven hits, Swampscott started the scoring as Casey Decamp picked up an RBI-double in the second inning, but Guilmer Galva’s double headlined a three-run sixth inning for English.
Galva also earned the win for English on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out two. Eldrian Bonilla entered in relief, racking up two strikeouts and sealing the deal for the Bulldogs.
Danvers 7
Peabody 4
Jariel Tolentino, Noah Crocker, and Mike Petro each registered two hits for the Tanners, but Peabody fell to Danvers Saturday. Evan Currie secured a complete-game win with seven strikeouts to lead the Falcons.
Marblehead 6
Haverhill 2
In the consolation round of the Karelis Division of the Hillie Classic, Marblehead (12-8) tripled up Haverhill Saturday.
Things were close in the sixth inning, but Shane Keough hit an inside-the-park three-run homer to extend a one-run lead to the eventual final score of 6-2.
The Magicians ended their regular season with 12 wins and a 7-6 record in the Northeastern Conference.
Central Catholic 5
St. John’s Prep 4
Cam LaGrassa roped three hits and The Prep won the hitting category 8-7, but it wasn’t enough to top Central Catholic Sunday. Nick Lembo and Will Shaheen also went home with hits, and Henry Hebert retired five and allowed just two hits across five innings.
Lynnfield 9
Belmont 7
Lynnfield’s baseball team defeated Belmont 9-7 Saturday to capture the Brendan Grant Tournament championship. The Pioneers handled Burlington 9-5 to advance to the title game.
“We’re lucky enough to win the game,” Lynnfield coach John O’Brien said. “That’s a good team over there [in Belmont]. The kids answered the bell on Friday and again Saturday.”
Lynnfield – which had 14 hits against Belmont – was led by Madux Iovinelli who went six strong innings.
“He did a great job of keeping them off-balanced,” Lynnfield coach John O’Brien said.
Nick Razzaboni won tournament MVP, collecting seven hits across the two games.
BOYS LACROSSE
St. John’s Prep 12
Hingham 9
The St. John’s Prep Eagles (17-2) defeated the Hingham Harbormen (18-2) on Saturday with Jake Vana (4 goals, 1 assist) leading the way.
Jimmy Ayers and Rowan Mondello each ripped two goals, Gavin Kornitsky made six saves, and Chris Esposito won 18 of 20 faceoffs for The Prep.
VOLLEYBALL
Lynn Tech 3
Whittier 1
Lynn Tech’s volleyball team won its last game of the season with a 3-1 final against Whittier in set scores of 25-19, 15-25, 25-19, and 25-21.
“[It was an] all-around great, balanced team effort to finish the season,” Tech coach Kaitlyn Wechsler said.
Jephthan Onyighichi had eight kills, six blocks, and two aces, Elmer Duran had eight digs, eight assists, two aces, and one kill, and Jayden Tran had 16 digs and three aces.
Continuing the offensive firepower, Keury Mena had 14 digs, two aces, and one kill, Anthoni Diaz had five kills and one dig, Miguel Najarro had eight digs and five assists, Joseph Amaro had eight digs and three aces, and Didlaire Jacques Jr. had four kills and three blocks.
TRACK AND FIELD
St. Mary’s eighth grader Kelsey Kwiatek recorded a personal best in the mile (5:40.8) and anchored the 4×400 team (19th, season-best 4:40.17) of Tatum Cahill, Isabella Michel, and Mia DeLeon Lara to headline the Spartans at the MIAA Division 5 championships.
On the boys’ side, Brett O’Brien (4th) and Thomas Hooks (6th) impressed in the high jump. The 4×400 team of O’Brien, Nick Miller, Jesse Moriello, and Anthony D’Itria took fourth with a school record (3:32.11), while Kyle Kwiatek snagged a personal best in the mile (4:35.2).
