To the editor:
I encourage readers to support the upcoming Lynnfield BSA Scout Troop 48 inaugural car wash fundraiser on Sunday, June 4, from 10:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m.
Every dollar we raise will help cover the expenses of participating in campouts and adventures, as well as the purchase of necessary camping gear. Spread the news to help out the cause.
Another way to support our troop is to help us grow! Do you know a student in grade six through 12 who would enjoy scouting? We always welcome new members.
What can scouting offer? Something for everyone! Parents and caregivers universally complain that their children spend too much time on screens and social media. Get children involved in scouting and they’ll be having fun off screens, with other kids, pursuing new adventures.
Our troop meets weekly on Thursdays from 7-8:15 p.m. in the basement of the Centre Congregational Church on the Lynnfield Common. We have a major troop event nearly every month, often a campout or other adventure. Of course, we know families are busy so we do not expect scouts to participate in every meeting or event. We follow the scout motto: Do your best!
For example, from June 9-11, our troop will be camping in tents at Camp Greenough in Yarmouth Port so we can bicycle the Cape Cod Rail Trail. A few weeks later, five scouts and three parents will be sailing for a week off the Florida Keys, snorkeling the reefs and living aboard a 42-foot sailboat! In August, our full troop will attend J.N. Webster Scout Camp in Ashford, Conn. with a dozen other troops from New England. In the fall, more fun events are on the calendar.
Like most kids, my 13-year-old son Alan loves gaming and screen time, but he also loves scouting. I like to remind him that scouting is real life … not digital/screen life.
Scouting prepares our scouts to be engaged citizens and leaders. It can do the same for your child. For more information, please email me at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Patrick G. Curley
