Swampscott’s girls tennis team hosted Whitinsville Christian in the round of 32 of the Division 3 state tournament. The No. 14 Big Blue defeated the No. 19 Whitinsville 4-1 on Wednesday.

If there’s one thing about this Swampscott team, it’s that it knows how to win singles matches. Veronika Isagulyan (6-2, 6-1), Laine Foutes (6-2, 6-0), and Ana Eccles (6-0, 6-1) all took care of business, and just like that, the Big Blue jumped ahead 3-0.

Anna Ratner and Victoria Quagrello put on a show in doubles, winning 6-1, 6-2 to rack up the points. Even in Swampscott’s lone doubles loss, the freshmen twins of Ava and Alexia O’Donnell showed some serious potential.

Swampscott moves forward with nine total wins, and takes on Dover-Sherborn in the round of 16 (details TBD).

GIRLS TENNIS

Algonquin 5
Peabody 0

The No. 35 Peabody girls tennis team was bested by No. 30 Algonquin 5-0, eliminating the Tanners from the Division 1 state tournament.

Yasmine Giacalone lost a very competitive, back-and-forth match that could have gone either way in singles, but that’s just about where the positives ended.

“After a long bus ride, the girls gave their best effort and played tough right to the end,” Peabody coach John Sousa said.

At the end of it all, what a season it was for Peabody. Jessica Chau doubled her singles wins from a season ago, while Valentina Goga won 10 of 14 regular season matches.

Algonquin faces Lincoln-Sudbury Saturday at 1 p.m.

BOYS TENNIS

Apponequet 5
St. Mary’s 0

The No. 27 St. Mary’s boys tennis team lost to No. 6 Apponequet 5-0 Wednesday afternoon, ending its season at 6-7. No Spartans picked up points, but what a season it was for Mark Wood, Thomas Shea, Griffin L’IItalien and company.
