Title-seeking Prep tennis team off to a strong start (ROUNDUP)

The No. 2 St. John’s Prep tennis team took care of No. 34 Durfee Thursday. With the 5-0 win, The Prep is off to a solid start in its championship quest in Division 1. 

Paul Neal (6-0, 6-1) defeated Will Rumsey in first singles to get the Eagles off to a high-flying start. Jack Prokopis followed, dominating second singles against Jack Fitzgerald for a 6-0, 6-0 breeze.

Alex Melville won his singles matchup 6-1, 6-0 to keep the sweep intact. From there, the doubles combinations of Ben Liptak-Luke Prokopis (6-0, 6-0) and Luke Free-Boris Kouzminov (6-1, 6-0) took care of the rest.

The Eagles host Catholic Conference rival No. 15 Xaverian on Monday at 4 p.m.

BOYS TENNIS

Lynnfield 5

Mashpee 0

Lynnfield showed why it’s ranked third in Division 4 Thursday afternoon, defeating No. 30 Mashpee 5-0. The Pioneers were dominant in all phases, losing just one game in total.

Dan Levin and Shea McCarthy each swept their opponents 6-0, 6-0 in first and second singles – solidifying their status as two of the best singles players in the region. 

Shlok Kudrimoti played well to follow, winning third singles convincingly 6-0, 6-1.

In first doubles, the chemistry between Rafik Khodr and Russ Kasdon was on full display. The pair defeated Camdon Perry and Matt Duvall 6-0, 6-0. Last but not least, Ralfi Arkun and Brendan Sokop ensured the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win in second doubles. 

The Pioneers host No. 19 Rockport at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The game was postponed due to bus issues. The game has been rescheduled to Saturday at noon at Durfee High School. 

GIRLS LACROSSE

Hanover 21

St. Mary’s 3

The season officially ends for the No. 26 Spartans, who fell to a tough opponent in No. 7 Hanover on Thursday.

Although the Spartans didn’t get the result they were hoping for, positives were aplenty. Senior Payton Quirk topped off her outstanding career with another 12 saves, while Ava Nason netted a hat trick for the Spartans.
