The Lynn Classical softball team (12-8) was faced with challenge after challenge Friday evening. From hitting the road, to blocking out the rain, and dealing with an opponent 11 spots higher in the seedings, it was never going to be easy.
In the end, No. 38 Classical defeated No. 27 Lexington 5-2 in enemy territory.
Senior captain MeKayla Poisson came to play on the mound, punching out two and allowing just two hits to earn the win.
“She was lights out today. In the five innings, they didn’t put a ball to the outfield,” Classical coach Joe Morin said. “Lexington is a very good team and it only had two hits.”
It wasn’t easy, though. Lexington scored two runs in the first inning, but Poisson retired nine straight batters to shut them down the rest of the way.
Morin said she was “never rattled.”
“She throws six pitches [and] she’s got good speed,” Morin said. “She’s just a super competitor on the mound. She just wants the ball.”
Classical – which had 12 hits – was led by Poisson offensively, too. She went 2-for-3 with a run and three stolen bases. Manuela Lizardo connected on a home run and Nevaeh Eth went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
“Almost every girl in our lineup had two hits,” Morin said
Rachel Dana impressed on defense, making five big plays according to Morin, who now takes his team to face Lincoln-Sudbury at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
“Our motto all year is, ‘Let’s compete,’” Morin said. “I think it showed today.”
