The No. 40 Lynn English baseball team hit the road against No. 25 Shrewsbury Saturday, and the bus ride back was something special.

The Bulldogs defeated Shrewsbury 4-0 to advance to the round of 32 in the Division 1 state tournament. Now, they travel to face Weymouth at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Alijah Wallace got the start, allowing four hits and striking out two in a complete-game shutout. The right-handed pitcher let up a hit in the first inning, but bounced back and allowed just three the remainder of the game.

Kenry Manzanillo ripped a single to get the scoring going in the second inning, and Jariel Benzan, Jason Figuereo, Mateo Rodriguez, Eldrian Bonilla, and Guilmer Galva all followed with hits.

English left one more runner on base and had more strikeouts than Shrewsbury, but its timely hitting was the difference.

BASEBALL

Durfee 4
Lynn Classical 3

Lynn Classical’s baseball team fought to the end, but a four-run third inning from Durfee did the trick in eliminating the Rams from the state tournament.

Almani Gerardo, Brady Warren, and Christian Figueroa scored runs in the first inning, but that’s all Classical would get.

Kevin Whalen pitched all seven innings for the Rams.

Lynn Tech’s baseball season came to an end Saturday. Coach Edward Lewis said his group played hard, but mental mistakes and an inability to make routine plays resulted in the loss.

“We had opportunities and loaded the bases a couple of times, but, unfortunately, Case played some good defense and came up with the plays when they really needed to,” Lewis said.

The Tigers finished the regular season 10-10 and clinched its postseason spot on the final day of the regular season.

“I had a great group of guys this year. [There was] a lot of young talent that stepped up and played well,” Lewis said. “It would be great to still be playing, but I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
