The No. 1 St. Mary’s softball team advanced to the Division 3 Elite 8 after a 4-1 win against Dedham Wednesday. The Spartans will host the winner of Bishop Fenwick-North Reading Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Anna Fringuelli impressed on St. Mary’s mound, registering nine strikeouts and allowing just five hits in a complete-game victory.
Lory Suriel led the Spartans’ offense with two runs and a triple.
BASEBALL
BC High 4
St. John’s Prep 3
No. 10 St. John’s Prep lost 4-3 against rival and No. 7 BC High Wednesday. After a back-and-forth contest, the Eagles in blue and white were eliminated from the Division 1 state tournament.
BC High got out to a quick 2-0 start in the third inning, but an Aidan Driscoll single in the bottom of the fifth made it a brand new game.
From there, and despite another run for The Prep, it wasn’t enough in the 4-3 final. Prep ends its season 13-9 behind coach Dan Letarte.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Apponequet 11
Swampscott 7
Swampscott’s girls lacrosse team was eliminated from Division 3 playoff contention after its 11-7 defeat against Apponequet Wednesday.
Abby Eichler (2 goals, 1 assist), Brooke Waters (1 goal), and Coco Clopton (3 goals) all contributed offensively, while Lilah Caplan made 11 saves between the pipes.
Cohasset 20
Bishop Fenwick 4
The Crusaders fought hard, but it wasn’t their day as Fenwick was defeated 2-0 by Cohasset in the Division 3 state tournament. Fenwick finished the season ranked No. 14 in its division, and with a 10-10 record.
BOYS TENNIS
Belmont 5
Marblehead 0
Sometimes, even though you play well, it’s just not enough. All five of Wednesday’s matches were close, but Belmont eliminated Marblehead’s boys tennis team in a 5-0 decision.
Mika Garber lost just 6-4, 6-3, Jost Eggebrecht won one of his sets, and Matthew Sherf hung around in singles action.
“Mika Garber, in first singles, was up against the seventh-seeded player in Massachusetts and managed to play him evenly, up until leg cramps had him struggling to walk, but he got up and finished the match,” Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal said. “Jost Eggebrecht left it all on the court, rallying from behind 1-4 in the second set to win that set 7-5.”
The sophomore duo of Etan Farfel and Jayden Janock played a great doubles game, but fell 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1.
“Etan Farfel and Jayden Janock played their hearts out, winning the first set but losing the second set in a tiebreaker 9-7,” Foukal said.
Marblehead ends the season 16-4.
“It’s been a great season,” Foukal said. “I am so proud of how Marblehead boys tennis players competed and the sportsmanship they displayed.”
GIRLS TENNIS
Dover-Sherborn 4
Swampscott 1
Well, this one finally happened as No. 14 Swampscott and No. 3 Dover-Sherborn were scheduled to play both Monday and Tuesday, but the weather had other plans. Ultimately, however, Swampscott’s season came to an end after a 4-1 defeat.
“Unfortunately, it was a 4-1 loss, but all the girls played hard and we were very proud of their effort,” Swampscott coach Nina Rogers said. “It was a sad day for our seniors, but down the road what they’ll remember are the friendships they have made and the lessons learned. We will miss them.”
Senior captain Laine Foutes registered Swampscott’s lone point with a 6-4, 2-0 win in singles action (default due to injury). Anna Ratner and Victoria Quagrello lost a three-hour, three-set match in first doubles.
“There were some great points played by both teams,” Rogers said.
The Big Blue finished the season 9-8.
