The rain didn’t bother the Bishop Fenwick softball team (14-7) Thursday as the Crusaders, frankly, pitched their way to a 2-0 win against North Reading in the round of 16 in Division 3.

Fenwick pitcher Gigi Aupont went all seven innings, earning the win. She got out of a first-and-third jam in the fourth inning, and went 1-2-3 in the sixth inning to highlight another special performance for the ace.

After two runs in the first inning, the No. 9 Crusaders never looked back. They’ll travel to Breed Middle School in Lynn to take on No. 1 St. Mary’s (21-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday.

After a Cinderella story was in the making, Thursday marked the end of Marblehead’s baseball season. The visiting Magicians (14-9) were defeated, and eliminated, by Westfield in a 4-1 final.

“Four infield hits and some free runners via walks and a couple of errors proved costly,” Marblehead coach Mike Giardi said.

Westfield took its two first-inning runs and never looked back, picking up two more in the fourth and fifth innings.

Riley Schmitt, Matt Mahan, and Ian Maude went home with Marblehead’s three hits, while Maude struck out five across a complete game to impress on the mound.

In one that went down to the wire in set scores of 23-25, 25-23, 26-24, and 25-22, the Eagles saw their season come to an end at the hands of St. John’s, which advanced to its first semifinal appearance in school history.

The Eagles finish the season with a 13-7 record and a top-five ranking in Division 1.
