LYNN — Former Mayor Thomas McGee was recently appointed by Gov. Maura Healey to the Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Board of Directors. McGee, who served as the city’s 57th mayor from 2018-2022, will oversee public and private finance, and transportation planning and policy.
“Our administration is committed to ensuring that our state’s transportation system is safe, reliable, and accessible for all, and we’re confident that this talented, diverse group of leaders will drive that work on the DOT Board of Directors,” Healey said in a press release.
McGee also serves as a member of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s board of directors.
According to Healey’s press release, McGee is “committed to improving the state’s transportation system and strongly supports regional equity.”
The MassDOT Board of Directors serves as the governing authority of the state’s public transportation services. The board has 11 members.
“Every community in Massachusetts relies on our transportation system, so it’s essential that we make sure every community is represented at the decision-making table,” Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll said in the press release. “These new appointments to DOT’s Board of Directors reflect our commitment to being an administration for every region of Massachusetts and to bringing people with diverse experiences and backgrounds together to drive change.”
McGee also previously served as a state senator for the 3rd Essex District and was chair of the Senate Joint Committee on Transportation from 2011 to 2018. According to the press release, McGee served four terms in the state House of Representatives as well, representing West Lynn and Nahant.
“I’m pleased to welcome our new members to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Board of Directors,” MassDOT Secretary and CEO Gina Fiandaca said in the press release. “We are focused on creating safe, equitable, and reliable transportation for all, and I look forward to working with the MassDOT board to further these goals.”
McGee is also a member of the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees and the Pickering Middle School Building Committee.
Healey also appointed Harvard Medical School professor Dr. Lisa Iezzoni, A Better City President Emeritus Rick Dimino, and Wentworth Institute of Technology professor Ilyas Bhatti to the board.
