Swampscott seeks community volunteers for 10-year plan

SWAMPSCOTT — The Planning Board is searching for community members to help map the town’s future on the Master Plan Update Committee.

In 2015, the town drafted its 2025 Master Plan, a comprehensive 10-year blueprint for the development and growth of the town. It outlined goals, strategies, and policies to guide decision-making on issues such as land use, housing, transportation, economic development, and sustainability.

With the current master plan set to expire in 2025, Community and Economic Development Director Marzie Galazka said the town is searching for community-driven volunteers to help update the plan for the next 10 years.

“We’re really looking for volunteers or individuals that are passionate about the community,” Galazka said. “We do want to seek individuals who have diverse backgrounds and experiences, so then this way we can include their perspective and the long-term plans for the town.”

Volunteers will attend regular monthly meetings, and collaborate with town officials and consultants from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), as well as their fellow community members. They will participate in workshops and public forums, review and provide feedback on draft documents, and contribute to the overall master-plan development.

No prior experience in urban planning is required for this volunteer role, and Galazka said the town is searching for people who did not serve on the 2015 Master Plan Committee. Those interested in applying must email their letters of interest to Galazka no later than Aug. 31. Galazka said she plans to begin reviewing applicants in January 2024.

“We’re looking forward to working with Swampscott residents and committee members to help us update the master plan and really plan for a vibrant and sustainable Swampscott,” Galazka said.
