LYNNFIELD — Mia Muzio has wrapped up her first year as Lynnfield’s athletic director. In an action-packed year – both in and out of competition – she said it’s been a blast.
“This year was a success in so many ways, on and off the field. It was also a learning year for me as the athletic director. I was able to begin to define my vision for the athletics program while also getting to know our student-athletes and coaches,” Muzio said. “What a wonderful place and what a wonderful group of student-athletes and coaches. All of them are not only so dedicated to their sports, but to being good human beings. It’s such a pleasure to see.”
Despite all of the moving parts, it starts with the student-athletes according to Muzio.
“I cannot express how proud I am of all of our student-athletes. They are such an amazing group,” she said. “There is an endless amount of hard work and commitment from these student-athletes each day.”
“We had so many teams qualify this year and make deep postseason runs,” Muzio said. “Our teams are so competitive; I can’t wait to see what this year brings.”
She praised the senior class for making her transition as easy as possible.
“The seniors, this past year, made me feel so welcome as their new AD,” Muzio said. “They are such a kind, mature, and hard-working group. There are undoubtedly big things in the future for the 2023 seniors.”
As for her most memorable moments so far, there were too many to count.
“I wish I could pinpoint one memory,” Muzio said. “I think that my favorite memories center on our student-athletes and being able to get to know them this year. I am looking forward to continuing to do that this year.”
As for some Lynnfield upsets this year – girls basketball and boys tennis, to name a few – Muzio wasn’t at all surprised.
“I don’t think there were any surprises as our student-athletes are so talented,” Muzio said. “I will say that we had some really great postseason upsets that were amazing to watch like boys soccer at Medway and Softball at NDA Worcester. I’m not sure much surprised me with these teams, though. Our student-athletes put in the time and work to prepare and be as competitive as possible.”
Although a smooth first year, Muzio admitted there is lots to learn.
“I think there are always things that I would do differently and improve upon as I reflect on the school year. I think for this past year, I would have probably focused more on opportunities for our students to learn about leadership within their athletic programs,” Muzio said. “I plan to focus heavily on that this year with a new leadership/captains manual, the creation of an Athletic Department Leadership Council, and workshops.”
Although she enjoys all sports, as Muzio gears up for the fall, her love for field hockey is certainly included.
“I love the fall. My first coaching job was as a field hockey coach, so the fall holds a special place for me,” Muzio said. “It’s an exciting time, the start of the school year, and I just love seeing the kids out there for preseason. I cannot wait to see our coaches and kids.”
