To the editor:
I have seen the articles, social media posts, and numerous letters to the editor regarding the Broadway project and I feel that as a resident and vehicle operator living in the surrounding area, it is necessary to show my support of this project.
For years I have driven down Euclid Avenue and waited to turn onto Broadway, both prior to the installation of the light and since. The entire stretch of road from the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Broadway, and Jenness Street and Broadway (where the fountain resides), is in dire need of improvement.
I have passed accidents and have been left thinking, “Thank God that was not a pedestrian with a baby carriage.” I’ve witnessed cars cutting each other off to shoot down a side street (“no through traffic” streets) to avoid the light mess, causing more confusion, annoyance, and traffic slowdowns.
While I am sure that there are those who might disagree, this project does not seem to be about forcing arbitrary changes upon a neighborhood, and it certainly is, in my opinion, not about a fountain — which, for the record, seems to not actually be in jeopardy, but is more an exaggerated “call to arms.”
I view the proposed changes as basic, necessary improvements: traffic lights, sidewalks, accessibility, fresh pavement. All things most residents want and complain about the city not providing.
It’s about time this happens. I’m for this project and I hope other Lynn residents who commute through this area will see how these improvements will benefit them as well. I think overall this will actually be helpful for the Broadway residents (whether they know it today or not) who surely do not want to continue seeing snarled traffic and accidents in front of their homes.
Sincerely,
Jane Kelley
