LYNN — A 79-year-old Saugus man turned $10 into $1 million, converting a 1-in-1,612,800 chance to win the second-largest prize in the state lottery’s 100X Cash game.
Savuth Ing purchased the winning ticket at One Stop Mart on Boston Street in West Lynn. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the $1 million-prize winner.
Ing opted to receive his prize as a one-time $650,000 payment before taxes in lieu of a $50,000 payment each year for 20 years. He intends to use the sudden influx of funds to purchase a newer car for himself. He will also give some of the money to his grandchildren, the Massachusetts Lottery said in a statement.
Ing is the first and only person to win the $1 million prize in the 100X Cash game, which the lottery launched last month. An estimated 80.2% of players win a prize of some size, and the most common payout is $10.
The long odds Ing faced to win the $1 million translate to a roughly .0000062% chance.
The game’s largest prize, $4 million, was claimed by Jose Diaz, of Turner Falls, last month.
In order to win money on the scratch tickets, players must match any of their 15 numbers or one of five bonus numbers to one of six winning numbers. If they uncover a 5X, 10X, 20X, 50X, or 100X symbol, their prize will be increased by 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100 times. If they uncover a money-bag symbol, they win all 20 prizes shown on the ticket.
