The Old Burial Hill Restoration Committee is in the process of putting together a fundraiser for the restoration of “top priority” gravestones at the cemetery, Town Planner Rebecca Curran-Cutting said Monday.
According to Curran-Cutting, there is no date set for the contractors to begin the refurbishment, but said that it is expected to start in the near future. The committee has $10,000 to put toward the project, however, as that is not enough to cover the cost of all the gravestones, a fundraiser will be necessary.
The Historical Commission will be paying for the lost at sea monument, also known as the Fisherman’s Monument. Built in 1848, the monument lists the names of the deceased who were lost on shore and at sea. It has been put out for bidding for refurbishment.
Glover’s Regiment will also be assisting in the restoration process. Curran-Cutting said the regiment is interested in helping with fundraising for Glover’s Tomb, which is in need of a fair amount of restoration work.
Curran-Cutting added that a number of other gravestones will be worked on at the cemetery and at a meeting on Thursday, July 20, the committee discussed several fundraiser possibilities. She said that the fundraiser will likely take place sometime in September.
