LYNN — He’s been a member for more than 20 years, and now, it’s finally happened. James Friedman of Saugus shot a 68 on the final day to capture the Gannon Municipal Golf Course Club Championship.
“Excitement level was high,” Friedman said. “I’ve always felt good enough, but it’s very difficult to win because there are so many great players at Gannon.”
Brian Mini was named net club champion – also winning for the first time. Mark Spencer snagged the senior club title with an impressive 298.
“The club championship is the best event there is,” said Friedman, who shot 70, 70, 74, and 68 for a total of 286.
Friedman “knew I had it won” after hitting the fairway with his 18th-hole drive. Although, he admits it was a tight race.
“It was close the entire tourney,” Friedman said. “John Boland, who is a great friend of mine, had the lead for most of it. He’s an awesome player, so my mindset was that I had to be near-perfect if I was going to pass him.”
He did just that, as Friedman and company went straight to the bar to celebrate.
The support from my fellow members was very humbling,” Friedman said. “I feel like there were a lot of people pulling for me, and it was awesome to see how many stuck around behind the 18th green to congratulate me.”
Maybe the best part, however, was that his niece, Cate, was cheering him on.
“Which was pretty awesome,” Friedman said.
He added how grateful he is for his brother, Ben, and all of his support. When it comes to winning, it must run in the family.
“He’s won two club championships himself,” Friedman said.
Boland and Connor McDonagh-Poh tied for second place (294). John Budrow (321) and Tony Ferrini (331) rounded out second and third place in the senior flight.
