LINCOLN, N.H. — A mother of four from Lynn drowned Tuesday while attempting to save her son in New Hampshire.
New Hampshire Fish and Game spokesperson Heidi Murphy said that Melissa Bagley, 44, of Lynn, was at Franconia Falls in New Hampshire with her husband, former Lynn Police officer and current Everett Police Lt. Sean Bagley, and three of her children, along with one of the children’s friends.
According to a New Hampshire Fish and Game press release, Melissa Bagley jumped into the water to help her 10-year-old son after he slipped and fell into one of the pools at the falls. The release said that Melissa Bagley “immediately began having trouble” before two of the children jumped into the water to assist the 10-year-old and Melissa Bagley.
They were able to rescue the 10-year-old, but not Melissa Bagley.
Melissa Bagley was found on a rock by her husband, who began to perform CPR but was ultimately unable to resuscitate her.
In the same incident, an 18-year-old male became trapped in rocks at the falls, but was saved by members of the Bagley family and later taken to Littleton Hospital with injuries.
A release from the New Hampshire State Police said it is investigating the incident.
Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria released a statement on Facebook in response to the incident, asking the community to give the Bagley family time and space to mourn.
“Yesterday’s events were unimaginable for Sean and his family,” DeMaria’s statement read. “This tragic event is an important reminder to us all to never miss an opportunity to tell those you love how much they mean to you. My prayers are with Lt. Bagley and his family.”
