REGION — The City of Lynn released an official advisory warning residents to avoid contact with the water in Lynn Harbor and the Saugus River for at least 48 hours after heavy rain Friday led to a sewer overflow.
The advisory explained that combined sewer overflows from the Lynn Water and Sewer Commission’s combined sewer system entered the surface waters of both bodies.
The overflow likely consisted of untreated or partially treated sewage and waste. The advisory also warned residents to avoid contact with the water for 48 hours after the discharge or when the overflow ceases due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants.
According to the Lynn Water and Sewer Commission, the sewer overflow had ceased as of 11:15 a.m. Friday.
This marks Lynn’s fourth overflow event in the last month after an overflow on Aug. 8 pumped nearly 6 million gallons of sewage into Lynn Harbor and King’s Beach. A separate overflow also previously affected the Saugus River in May.
