PEABODY — A police officer shot and killed a dog as it attacked its owners Thursday night.
Peabody Police responded to a distress call from 22 Endicott St. at 10:45 p.m. Thursday. On scene, responding officers saw two people — one man and one woman — actively being attacked by their dog.
According to Peabody Police Lt. David Bonfanti, officers immediately noticed the two owners standing on the roof of a car with “extensive injuries.” In a written statement, Bonfanti said the man was bleeding heavily, and the dog was acting in an aggressive manner and lunging at the two people.
When the dog’s owners tried to climb down from the roof of the car, Bonfanti said the dog attacked them again, this time latching on to the woman’s head and shaking her.
“The officer felt the female party was in danger of serious bodily injury or death. The officer used his service firearm to neutralize the dog,” Bonfanti said.
Peabody Fire and Atlantic Ambulance rendered medical aid to the victims and transported them to the hospital to be further treated for serious injuries.
As of 11 a.m. Friday, the man was still being treated for his injuries. The woman had been released.
The Peabody Police Department and Massachusetts State Police are investigating the incident.
