You know what I’ve been thinking? St. Mary’s basketball makes a lot of noise during the school year – last winter saw title appearances from both the boys and girls programs. That said, the Spartans don’t stop in the summer.
In Peabody’s James St. Summer League, St. Mary’s defeated Bishop Fenwick in the semifinals before besting Everett in the title game. Donel Mutombo scored the game-winning basket on a pass from JJ Martinez with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Former Spartans Omri Merryman, David Brown Jr., and Derick Coulanges coached, and by the time the final whistle blew, they were all champions.
Lynn loves its summer basketball. From pickup and outdoor showdowns to organized tournaments across the country, players from Lynn have been well-represented. It must pay off, as last winter saw tournament success from English, Lynn Tech, and KIPP, too.
