You know what I’ve been thinking? The Endicott football team (1-0) blew past St. Lawrence (0-1) 31-0 at Hempstead Stadium in Beverly on Saturday, and local student-athletes dominated.
Peabody’s Shea Lynch completed both of his passes and Marblehead’s Ryan Freiberger hauled in a 30-yard touchdown. That said, quarterback Clayton Marengi of Lynnfield stole the show.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder launched his senior campaign with a bang. Through the air, he went 14-for-18 with 186 yards and two touchdowns. Marengi added 79 yards and a touchdown on the ground, also, including a 19-yard burst.
No interceptions or fumbles, either.
The business management major did it in highlight-reel fashion. From a 5-yard rushing score to a 30-yard strike in the corner of the endzone, Marengi was, well, a problem.
He tossed 1,667 yards last season. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but he’s on pace to beat that if he plays like he did Saturday – just saying.
The Gulls return home Saturday against Ithaca with kickoff set for 12 p.m.
