SAUGUS — The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted unanimously to appoint Darren Ring as one of the town’s ten constables, and, in doing so, lauded Ring for his commitment to the town.
Ring, a Town Meeting member from Precinct 10, told the selectmen he had served as a constable for six or nine years several decades prior, but was removed from the post when an earlier board trimmed the number of constables in town.
The volunteer position functions as quasi-law enforcement, and constables have limited powers, with their primary task being that of a sworn peace officer.
Now, with a post open, Ring opted to throw his hat in the ring again.
“This is my neighborhood, this is my town. It’s something that I enjoy doing… I’m passionate,” he told board members.
Selectman Jeff Cicolini, a childhood friend of Ring’s, said the appointment was a “no-brainer.”
“It’s nice to see people still so invested in the town and wanting to give back, and I’d be honored to support you as constable,” Cicolini told Ring.
Ring’s appointment was confirmed by a unanimous vote on a motion made by Vice Chair Debra Panetta. His term will expire on Aug. 31, 2026.
The selectmen received a bevy of letters supporting Ring’s appointment as constable, a fact cited by Cicolini when he expressed his support for Ring.
Precinct 2 Town Meeting member Peter Rossetti said he “always found (Ring) to be a responsible and professional individual with a strong character.”
Mark DePippo, who worked with Ring on the town’s Housing Authority for more than a decade, described Ring as “a genuine, loyal, and dependable person, and definitely a wonderful family man.”
“He will be an asset to any workplace or any job position with his qualities and devotion,” DePippo wrote.
Precinct 6 Town Meeting member Jeanie Bartolo, in a handwritten letter, said she could not recommend Ring highly enough for the position.
In other business, the selectmen approved a trio of appointments to the Council of Aging brought by Town Manager Scott Crabtree and unanimously approved a common victualer’s license for a new Vietnamese restaurant, Long’s Noodle House, at 184 Broadway.
