You know what I’ve been thinking? Storylines were aplenty during the St. Mary’s-Winthrop football game at Manning Field Friday night.
I predicted a 31-10 win for St. Mary’s, but a 15-14 win will have to do.
The Spartans trailed 14-0 in the second half. A lot of players would have just “tanked it,” as said by St. Mary’s Coach Sean Driscoll.
Well, his boys did the opposite.
From Ernie Panias’ fumble recovery to a Maxwell Parent rushing score, and to a safety in the back of the endzone, the comeback was on. Another touchdown later from Parent – as well as the winning extra point – the Spartans took the lead.
Adrian Lule (sack) and Chris Marks (swatted pass) made big-time defensive plays to halt Winthrop’s final drive, and that was all she wrote.
Driscoll collected his 100th career win between his stints at Winthrop (11 years) and St. Mary’s. He literally and figuratively snagged his 100th win riding into the sunset – the pink sky was a sight to see on Friday.
Will the Spartans keep it going at Bishop Feehan on Friday (6:30 p.m.), or will the Shamrocks find their luck? Only time will tell.
St. Mary’s, good week.
