Joey Barrett

September 20, 2023 by Joey Barrett

Thanks to goals from Ally Bettencourt (2) and Connie Patturelli, Peabody’s girls soccer team tripled up Gloucester 3-1 in enemy territory on Wednesday.

Patturelli, Gianna Sinibaldi, and Avery Marcus registered assists, and just one ball got by Eva Joyce in net.

Peabody hosts North Andover Saturday at 10 a.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Saugus 3
Marblehead 1

Saugus’ girls soccer team, led by Chris Coviello, beat Marblehead 3-1 in a “very physical match” according to Saugus coach Brianna Alimonti.

Shay Sewell assisted Madison Botta’s first goal of the game just two minutes into the action. Botta added another, as did Sewell, and Marblehead had no answer.

“Shay and Shawn Sewell dominated the midfield… They were a force, both attacking and defending. The pair made a true difference,” Alimonti said. “Layla Manderson and Violet Hawley also shut down many counter attacks with their defense.”

Swampscott 0
Beverly 0

Despite its home field advantage, Swampscott fought to a draw against the Panthers of Beverly Wednesday evening.

“Lauren Labrador played well for us in goal and Sam Ward and Cecelia Tripp played a great defensive game,” coach Jaymie Caponigro said.

The tie comes on the heels of an 8-0 victory against Salem where Greta Siefken, Fiona Keaney, Lyla Rogers, Valentine Park, Stella Stands, and Jesse Ford all found the back of the net.

BOYS SOCCER

St. Mary’s 15
Bishop Fenwick 0

Talk about an explosive offense. St. Mary’s (4-0) put up a 15-piece en route to a thrashing of Fenwick Wednesday. Kaya Jackson (4 goals, 2 assists), Nick Miller (3 goals, 5 assists), Marcos Weber Jr. (3 goals, assist), and Mehdi Khemmich (3 goals) led the offense.

Chance Bonfanti, Mauricio Marin, Brody McCarran, Cade Cornell, and Bryan Rovaldi also scored goals.

“[It was] another solid overall team win to move our record to 4-0 on the season. Defense shined once again with our fourth consecutive shutout with clean sheets in net by both Jacob Guarino and Cian LeVasseur,” coach Shane McCarran said. “Our offense really came together this afternoon with a flurry of goals from multiple scorers. Thomas Weber controlled the game for us in the middle and was one of our top performers. It was great to see the boys come out strong from the start against our rival Bishop Fenwick.”

Gloucester 2
Peabody 1

Peabody’s boys soccer team (2-2-1) fought hard, but ultimately fell to the Fishermen of Gloucester 2-1 Wednesday. Abu Kaba scored for the Tanners, while Jaiden Fils-Aime, AJ Forte, and Kacper Kowalczyk all played well according to coach Stan McKeen.

FIELD HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 1
Fenwick 0

In a 1-0 victory for St. Mary’s, senior Kasey Litwin went home with the game’s only goal, while
sophomore Tabby Lopes recorded her third shutout of the season.

GOLF

Beverly 42
Peabody 30

In “another tough loss” according to Peabody coach Peter Cronan, the Tanners fell to Beverly at The Meadow. Mike Ryan and Mike Petro won their matches, while Tristan Joyce tied.

Peabody hosts Winthrop Thursday.

Winthrop 36.5
Swampscott 35.5

Despite Dawson DiBarri, Ben O’Brien, Nick Smyth, and Jack Smyth winning their matches, the Big Blue (1-5) lost another matchup on the young season. Swampscott hosts Gloucester on Thursday.

Gloucester 39
Marblehead 33

Three Magicians (6-1) won their matches and Marblehead received strong performances from Jacob Hershfield, Marty Ryan, Toby Grenier, and Simon Quicken (low of 37), but the program suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday.

VOLLEYBALL

Marblehead 3
Masconomet 2

In set scores of 25-22, 25-27, 24-26, 25-19 and 15-12, Marblehead’s volleyball team (4-2) topped Masconomet. Luka Bornhorst had seven kills and Greta Sachs tallied eight. Eva Burke recorded 31 assists and Megan Parkman had 21 digs, while Sydney Faris and Mari Modrzynska each had 13 digs.
