Swampscott hands Saugus its first loss

SAUGUS — The Swampscott football team (2-1-1) put on a masterclass through the air on Friday night. The result: a 35-0 road win over Saugus (3-1) to hand the Sachems their first loss.

After a scoreless first quarter, Swampscott kicked it into gear in the second, scoring all five touchdowns in the quarter.

Just seconds into the frame, quarterback Jack Spear scrambled away from pressure before finding one of his favorite targets, Liam Keaney (7 catches), across the endzone for an 11-yard touchdown.

Not only did Keaney have a strong performance, but fellow receiver, Jack Hazell, had himself a big night, finishing with 126 receiving yards and three total touchdowns.

After getting the ball back, Swampscott decided to air it out again. Hazell beat his man off the line and Spear delivered a perfect pass. Hazell then showed off his speed, going 50 yards to the house (14-0).

Jay Domelowicz dove on a Saugus mishap in the endzone for another score, followed by another Spear-to-Hazell connection – this time, a 76-yard touchdown with 5:28 remaining in the half (28-0).

As if things couldn’t get any worse for Saugus, or better for Hazell, he read the quarterback’s eyes and jumped the lane for the interception. From there, he returned it nearly 80 yards for the score to make it 35-0, the eventual final.

Saugus suffered injuries during the week as its starting quarterback, Cam Preston (knee injury), and star defender, Braden Faiella, both sat out.

Spear finished the game 14-for-22 for 214 yards and three touchdowns, while Keaney caught seven passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Saugus looks to bounce back next week on the road against Salem, while Swampscott travels to Northeast Metro.
