October 1, 2023 by Joey Barrett

Saturday afternoon in the Frank Kelley Invitational in Wrentham, the Bishop Fenwick girls recorded the lowest score (48) to dominate the competition.

To put things into perspective, team City of Boston finished second with 101 points – a 53-point trail. Julia Davis (6th; 11:59), Marianna Kay (8th; 12:05), Adelaide Sweatman (11th; 12:29), Olivia Rowe (17th; 12:40), and Caroline Blatchford (26th; 12:54) led the way for Fenwick.

“It was an outstanding showing on the 3-kilometer course with each girl recording a personal best time for the distance,” said Fenwick coach Fred Doyle.

Led by the Appleyard twins, Sam (37th) and Doron (59th), the Fenwick boys finished 13th among 36 teams in their 340-runner division. Backing them up were Will Rand (125th), Ryan Gauthier (127th), Aiden Doyle (130th), Josh Miller (136th), Michael Mazzarella (138th), Graham Archibald (260th), and Aidan Judge (289th).

St. Mary’s wasn’t too shabby, either. Kelsey Kwiatek led the way for the girls, taking 38th out of 200 with a time of 20:25. All Lady Spartans recorded season-bests.

On the boys’ side, Kyle Kwiatek medaled with an 11th place finish out of 200 runners with a time of 16:14. More than half of St. Mary’s boys ran personal bests as the team placed 20th.

“This is the same course that is hosting the MIAA state championship this year, so this was a terrific opportunity to have a dress rehearsal of how we want that to go,” said St. Mary’s coach Tristan Smith.

The Marblehead boys came home with hardware, too, as several Magicians finished in the top 25 of their respective races. In the Freshman/Sophomore 3K Race, Henrik Adams (6th; 10:14) and Will Cruikshank (16th; 10:35) impressed.

In the Junior/Senior 3K Race, Isaac Gross followed up his first place finish at the Ocean State Invitational with another top-of-the-podium finish (9:21). Nate Assa (3rd; 9:47), Will Cerrutti (13th; 10:12), and Ryan Blestowe (15th; 10:12) also ran well.

As for the girls, despite losing her shoe mid-race, Marrietta O’Connell won easily with a bolting time of 10:51.

The Magicians travel to take on Winthrop at Deer Island on Tuesday, while Fenwick hosts the Catholic Central Freshman/Sophomore Meet the same afternoon.
