LTE: Lynn is changing

To the editor

October 4, 2023 by To the editor

To the editor:

I’ve lived in the city of Lynn for 44 years, and we are encountering a new era in the history of Lynn.

Like many people, I receive Amazon deliveries, and like many people, they are placed on my front porch. And like many people, I trust that the delivered package will be there when it is expected to arrive. Recently, I had a very large delivery; it was visible on my front porch, and it was stolen.

The individual who took the box and ran off obviously didn’t realize what was inside it. It just looked big and inviting. They didn’t know that the package contained diatomaceous earth. So when they went running down the street from my house, opened the box, saw the contents, and thought it might have been something in disguise, white and powdery, they found out it was only the diatomaceous earth.

I didn’t know the package was missing. Just like many people, I saw that the delivery had happened and it was not on my porch. But then, as I was driving home, I saw this big empty box on the side of my street, and on the adjacent side, the package was thrown on the sidewalk. Apparently, in their haste to steal and take the contents, it did not matter how far they had to run with the package. I am sure they were not too happy with their looting that day. I am glad to report that Amazon took care of the situation, and I now have my diatomaceous earth.

This event has made it very apparent that the city of Lynn is changing, and not for the better.

We are undergoing some significant changes in community safety and well-being in the city of Lynn. Are we entering into an era where it will be less safe to walk the streets of Lynn, allow our children to play outside, leave empty packages on our front porches, or leave our homes unattended?

The question I guess many of us have is what are the city officials doing to deter the increasing violence, the reduction of safety — especially that of our young people — and the protection of our property, including our Amazon deliveries?

Sincerely,

Maria Perez
Lynn
