For the second time this season, the Pioneers handed the defending Division 3 state champion Clippers a loss. Dillon Reilly scored the only game of the game, heading an Allesandro Raimondi corner kick on the far post into the back of the net in the 12th minute. The Pioneers, who are ranked No. 2 in the state Division 4 power rankings behind Hampshire Regional, pulled to within one point of clinching a spot in the tournament and improved to 9-1-1.

“It was kind of an ugly win as I didn’t think we played very well after the first 15 minutes or so,” Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe said. “We were missing some key players today but we had a couple of freshmen in Brendan Reilly and Ollie Morgan who stepped in and both played well when we needed it.”

Lynnfield’s next game is at home Tuesday against Manchester-Essex (4).

Revere 5

Classical 3

An eight-goal thriller saw Classical come out on the losing end. The Rams led twice in the game and held a 2-1 lead at the half, but Revere bounced back scoring four goals in the second half.  Classical’s Chris Galvez score one goal in each half.

Abbie Deleon scored the other goal for the Rams.

The Rams will travel to Gloucester on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game, while Revere’s next game is on Tuesday against Lynn English at 4:15 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynnfield 1

Newburyport 1

At Newburyport Thursday, the Pioneers (8-1-1) moved to within one point of clinching a spot in the tournament. Lynnfield took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on an Ally Sykes goal off a corner by Emma Rose. The Clippers answered five minutes later on what coach Mark Vermont described as a “scrappy goal on a partial breakaway.”

“We had a few other chances to score but didn’t capitalize,” Vermont said. “Their goalie had a huge save in the second half and our goalie (Ava Gamache) didn’t have to do too much in net but did a good job taking care of the ball.”

Lynnfield is back in action Saturday morning at home against Danvers (10 a.m.).
