You know what I’ve been thinking? KIPP’s football team has a lot of stars, but Friday night against Lowell Catholic, Chanel Gutierrez shined the brightest. Actually, he may have shined brighter than anyone in the state.
In the Panthers’ 38-28 win, Gutierrez tallied 320 yards (205 passing, 115 rushing) and five total touchdowns.
“He was great tonight,” coach Jim Rabbitt said.
He did it in crunch time, too. KIPP trailed 22-8 at halftime in enemy territory, but the senior showed the rest of his teammates what it’s like to lead by example.
“It feels like any time we need someone to step up and put us on their back, Chanel is that guy,” Rabbitt said. “His energy is contagious on the field and when he’s running hot, there’s no slowing him down.”
Gutierrez’s performance catapulted the Panthers to 4-1, and now, they host a struggling Greater Lowell Tech team at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Will Chanel continue to pile up the numbers, or will the Panthers meet their match?
Either way. Chanel, good week.
