LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield Art Guild will present a pastel demonstration by Laurie Basham on Thursday, Oct. 19. According to the LAG, Basham focuses on exploring the interplay of color within light and shadow across various subjects, including landscapes, figures, and still-life scenes.
“I love to capture moments of beauty in everyday life,” Basham said in a statement to the LAG. “I see something I want to paint every day; the way light dances on the petals of a flower, a lacy shadow cast by a magnificent tree, or the glow of light on the edge of a child’s face. When I get to my easel, whether it be outside or in my studio, I am in a place of alignment. I am present in the moment and all the worries of my world are lifted in those moments.”
She finds inspiration in her travels across the country, engaging in plein-air painting whenever possible. Additionally, she utilizes personal reference photos featuring her grandchildren and still-life compositions for her studio work.
“No matter the circumstances, the feeling of those colorful chunks of pure pigment against the surface of my paper allows my intuition to combine with years of experience to either provide me with a learning experience or a finished work of art that I can be proud of,” Basham said in the statement. “Because my intent from the start is an emotional one, my hope is that my finished piece can evoke a similar response in the viewer.”
According to the LAG, Basham, who is originally from Rockville, Md., began her artistic journey with a 1985 degree in art education from the University of Maryland. She went on to have a celebrated career as an art educator in Howard County, Md., earning numerous accolades and awards throughout the years.
The demonstration will be open to the members of the LAG through invitations. The event will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. virtually.
