PEABODY — The Peabody Education Foundation announced the annual George Peabody Legacy Award recipients this week. The award recognizes educators and philanthropists from within the community who work to provide significant contributions to the city’s educational system.
Karlyne L. Furnari, Fran Gallugi, David Gravel, Keri Kinnaly, Rosemary Slattery, and Mark Whiting are this year’s winners.
According to the foundation, recipients are selected based on five criteria: a lasting impact on education, change for the good of the people during a significant period of time, active membership of the city’s community, tireless advocacy for the betterment of Peabody students, and living or working in Peabody.
The six honorees will be officially celebrated at a ceremony at Higgins Middle School on Thursday, Oct. 19 beginning at 6 p.m.
“It is an honor to recognize educators who have gone above and beyond to make a lasting difference in the lives of their students. In the classroom they are both learners and facilitators of learning,” Gravel, who is also the president of the foundation, said in a press release. “They attend to the social and emotional needs of their students making a lasting, positive impact by providing a progressive learning atmosphere meeting the needs of every individual child… Teachers and community members are rising to the challenge by providing an education that goes beyond just academics.”
