Led by Shea Newhall’s 31 points, his St. Mary’s Spartans (11-4) took care of business on the road against Lowell Catholic, 182-134.

“Shea hits a long ball and as long as he manages the course the right way, he comes out with a great number,” coach Jay Fiste said. “He’s starting to get his game really fine-tuned.”

He was followed by Micah Hashikawa (33 points), Andrew Potter (31), Chase Collins (30), Matt Smith (28), Josh Doney (26), Stephen Nason (25), and Kyle Rush (23).

St. Mary’s hosts Gloucester Monday before the Catholic Central championships, which will feature the five-man team of Newhall, Rush, Potter, Hashikawa, and Collins.

GOLF

Swampscott 30.5

With Thursday’s win, the Tanners (7-7) are eligible for the state qualifier to be played on Oct. 23. Peabody winners were Matt Ryder, Tristan Joyce, Mike Ryan, Cam Connolly, Nate Palhares, and Joe Keka.

Dawson Dibarri and Nick Smyth won their matches for Swampscott.

Lynn Classical 49

Marblehead 43

Masconomet 29

Marty Ryan (34) was named medalist, while Charlie Grenier, Jacob Hershfield, James Bickell, Matt Mahan, Adrian Baron, and Toby Grenier followed with victories in a strong performance from Marblehead (12-1).

Simon Quicken shot a 37 and tied his match.

GIRLS SOCCER

Somerville 8

Lynn Classical 2

Classical hit the road to face Somerville on Thursday, returning with an 8-2 loss. Arianna Martinez scored the Rams’ first goal on a through ball from Kaydee Rouse, while Lauren Wilson tucked the other.

Marissa Stone and Mea Papazoglou split the game in net. Coach Jessica Gambale added, “Our senior captain, Rachel Dana, played especially great on defense – even saving a shot standing on the goal line.”

VOLLEYBALL

Hamilton-Wenham 3

Lynnfield 2

The Pioneers (6-7) let a 2-0 lead get away in five sets on Dig Pink Night Thursday at home, 25-10, 25-17, 23-25, 25-27, 13-16.

Trailing 22-17 in the fourth set, Lynnfield roared back on the serve of Erin Higdon. She rattled off four straight aces in a 7-2 run. That, combined with a massive cross-court kill by Erika Pasquale, flipped the score with the Pioneers serving for the match at 24-22.

But a combination of two big kills from the Generals’ Gaby Campbell (19 kills) and a couple of Lynnfield hitting errors propelled the Generals into a decisive fifth set. After trailing 5-0, Lynnfield battled back and led 13-12, but Hamilton-Wenham won the last three points to seal the match.

Lynnfield coach Brent Ashley said the Pioneers had solid performances from Pasquale and Chase Carangelo who combined for more than 20 kills, as well as Janhavi Joglekar and Lilyana DeLeo who both had more than 13 assists each, and Hidgon, who notched eight-plus aces.

“Erin did that last year. She’s the real deal – a serving specialist,” Ashley said of Higdon. “When she’s on, she’s on. [She’s] just such a special server. Tonight, though, I don’t think you could have predicted at any one time who was going to win the match. It was that close.”

The Generals (10-3) are back in action Thursday at Swampscott (5:30), while the Pioneers’ next match is Tuesday against Lynn Classical (5:15).

“They’re a scrappy team,” Ashley said of the Rams.

Shawsheen 3

Lynn Tech 0

In sweeping set scores of 21-25, 14-25, and 16-25, Tech (8-3) fell short against Shawsheen. Maria Groscos had 11 digs, three kills and an ace, Ariana Camilo added two aces and two kills, and Katie Tartarini registered another three kills.

Ipswich 3

Marblehead 0

Despite Alyssa Gentile’s 12 digs and a strong outing from Sydney Faris, Marblehead (6-7) was defeated in set scores of 7-25, 11-25, and 12-25.

Fenwick 3

St. Mary’s 1

In a hard-fought matchup at St. Mary’s, the Spartans fell to Fenwick, 3-1. Lorynes Suriel (12 kills, 9 digs, 40 assists, 14 service points) impressed for the hosts.

FIELD HOCKEY

Swampscott 6

Saugus 0

One game, six goal-scorers for Swampscott’s field hockey team, which took care of Saugus on Teacher Appreciation Day at the school.

Big Blue scorers were Meg Baran, Maisie Russo, Coco Clopton, Victoria Quagrello, Sophia Ciciotti, and Lucy Brown.

Danvers 4

Peabody 0

Despite Sophia Kassis racking up 27 saves – one on a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter – the Falcons of Danvers flew over Peabody on Thursday.

“She was the player of the game, without a doubt,” Peabody coach Jillian Tobin said. “We are proud of our fire in this game overall.”

Bishop Feehan 4

St. Mary’s 0

Gianna Tringale stood tall with 10 saves, but the Spartans (3-2-1) fell to a strong Bishop Feehan program, 4-0.

Positives from a negative: St. Mary’s finished above .500 in CCL play for the first time in its six-year existence.
