LYNN — After a 2-0 start, the St Mary’s Spartans (4-2) hit a bit of a midseason lull. Two straight losses to Bishop Feehan and Bishop Fenwick by a combined score of 78-16 wasn’t ideal.
But after a morale-boosting, 16-14 victory a week ago against Bishop Stang, a match against Arlington Catholic was an opportunity for two in a row.
Well, the Spartans led 38-0 at halftime, forcing three turnovers and scoring six touchdowns, and finished with a 45-8 win.
The get-right game for St. Mary’s went exactly as planned in the first half.
After forcing an Arlington punt from its own 9-yard line, the Spartans needed just four plays to find their first score. Tyler Guy showed off his athleticism, reaching over two defenders to haul in a 16-yard touchdown off Yaniel Belliard’s back-shoulder fade (6-0).
Just minutes later on the Spartans’ ensuing drive, freshman Maxwell Parent found a hole and took it 36 yards for a 12-0 cushion in the first.
It wasn’t just the offense scoring in the first half. St. Mary’s defense returned two interceptions back for touchdowns. Nicholas Marks took his 55 yards, followed by Parent taking one 100 yards to halt a strong Arlington drive.
St. Mary’s hits the road Friday against Cardinal Spellman (6:30 p.m.). Arlington Catholic will also play in enemy territory, but on Thursday against Cathedral (6 p.m.).
