LYNN — Dozens of people took part in a parade celebrating Hispanic heritage throughout the city on Tuesday.
Starting at City Hall, marchers walked to the South Common, holding flags representing several Latin American countries, before returning to City Hall for a short program featuring remarks from Mayor Jared Nicholson.
“Thank you for being here on behalf of the city to send a message of how proud we are about the Hispanic community here in Lynn,” Nicholson said. “These moments where we get to gather together and celebrate one another’s differences are the most enjoyable parts of what we do here and one of the most important in terms of bringing us together.”
Nicholson noted how important it is for the city to recognize the diversity within Lynn’s Hispanic community. This was reflected outside City Hall with the raising of a flag that contained the flags of different Latin American countries.
Nicholson also read a proclamation recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Several members of the City Council and School Committee were in attendance, along with city officials like the event’s organizer, Faustina Cuevas, who serves as the diversity, equity, and inclusion officer for Lynn.
“It’s with a lot of pride that we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month,” Cuevas said. “Latinos are the biggest ethnic group in Lynn and that’s something that we take a lot of pride in.”
The program also featured a keynote address from North Shore Latino Business Association Board of Directors President Sergio Espinoza and a performance of traditional dance routines by Cultura Latina Dance Academy.
