English and Classical wrap things up at GBL Open

NAHANT — The Greater Boston League season has come to a close as the five conference competitors met in the GBL Open for one last round.

On a beautiful and sunny afternoon at Kelley Greens Golf Course, both Lynn Classical and Lynn English fought for their conference recognition.

It was quite the day for English, finishing second overall with 111 points, just behind Revere (121).

The Bulldogs also saw all four of their golfers finish in the top seven (20 total golfers), including 8th graders Ben Rodriguez (T-2nd), Riley Driscoll (T-4th), and Jacoby Comeau (7th).

With the trio ready to represent English the next four years, things are looking up for coach Brett Molea and company.

“I think they have a little bit of vengeance coming for the next four years,” Molea said.

Molea also praised junior John Crowley (5th) for his efforts all season long, adding Crowley has done a great job “looking after the guys” during a successful year.

English’s 8-2 record also led the Bulldogs to the state tournament, where Comeau and Driscoll shined at Renaissance Golf Club in Haverhill last monday.

“We’ve got a bunch of middle school kids and young high school kids who now know what’s out there, and they know what to look forward to,” Molea said. “So, second place is great in the league overall – and in the championship – but I think they’re going to come back next year and, hopefully, take down the GBL.”

As for Classical, a fifth-place finish isn’t what the Rams had hoped for, but coach Jack Morrison also looks forward to his team’s future.

“We’re young. We had four freshmen. They’ve got a long way to go and they have a big upside. So, we’ll try to learn as we go,” he said.

Morrison added his team is rebuilding.

“When the season started, we had three returning players and 10 freshmen showed up, and the program was still alive,” Morrison said. “My guys are baseball players, and they’re still just learning… so we’ve got a big hill to climb, but they’re good kids and I think they’re good athletes.”

Morrison added he was “just thrilled that the kids came out” to play in the GBL open.

“And now, we can go from here,” he said.
