The Marblehead football (3-4) team accomplished a lot Friday night. The Magicians defeated Danvers, 17-7, extended their winning streak to three games, and picked up their first victory at Piper Field this season.
On fourth down midway through the first quarter, Colt Wales connected with Andy Palmer for 20 yards to open the scoring. Jake Scogland intercepted a pass in the second quarter, and all momentum belonged to the hosts.
As if they needed more of it, the Magicians struck again right before halftime. Wales tossed one to a speedy Brooks Keefe for a 45-yard touchdown (14-0).
Danvers cut the lead in half during the fourth quarter, but to no avail. Greg Matorny’s 28-yard field goal put a lid on it with 4:16 remaining.
Marblehead is currently ranked No. 18 in Division IV with playoff seedings being released later this week.
FOOTBALL
Medford 16
Lynn English 9
Lynn English dropped its regular season finale, 16-9, against Medford at Manning Field. The loss dipped the Bulldogs’ record to 2-6.
English’s two wins came against Revere (28-6) back in September, and Somerville last week (20-6). Both victories were on the road.
Winthrop 38
Saugus 8
Looking to avenge last season’s 17-point loss to Winthrop, Saugus will have to wait another year as the host Sachems fell, 38-8, Friday night.
Winthrop’s Nick Cappuccio sliced-and-diced his way to three first-half touchdowns. The Vikings rode that momentum to spoil Saugus’ Senior Night.
Despite defeat, senior captain Braden Faiella of the Sachems recorded his 400th career tackle. Faiella led the Northeastern Conference in the category a season ago with 186 tackles.
Stang 24
Fenwick 14
Fenwick’s Anthony Nichols rushed for a touchdown to open the scoring, and again in the fourth quarter, but his Crusaders dipped to 5-3 after falling to Stang, 24-14.
Two Fenwick turnovers led to Stang taking a 21-7 cushion into the break. The Crusaders never quit, but in the end, it was too little, too late.
Swampscott 42
Masconomet 7
The Big Blue finished last season 3-8. Fast forward a year with first-year coach Peter Bush helming the program, and Swampscott now stands at 5-3 after thrashing Masconomet Friday night.
Sam Nadworny plowed into the endzone for the first touchdown of the game and Swampscott held a 10-0 advantage at the break.
To kick off the second half, quarterback Jack Spear floated a perfect 32-yard pass to Joseph Marino for a touchdown. And from there, it was all Big Blue.
FIELD HOCKEY
Peabody 2
Revere 0
In Peabody’s final outing of the season, a 2-0 win against Revere was highlighted by Sophia Kassis’ four saves. The shot-stopper earned her third shutout and 142nd save of the season.
Meghan Collins found the net off of a pass from Iliana Nikolouzos, who also scored off a feed from Daniella White.
“We proudly ended the game with our seniors on the field together,” said coach Jillian Tobin.
VOLLEYBALL
