LYNN — More than 600 customers lost power in the area of Chatham Street after a car crashed into a utility pole on Chatham Street early Wednesday morning.
According to Police Lt. Rick Connick, the incident happened at 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, when the car slammed into the pole near 315 Chatham St. Images shared with The Item from the scene showed that the pole sustained heavy damage after the crash.
Connick said the operator, a 43-year-old Lynn man, was located away from the scene with minor injuries and subsequently transported to the hospital.
The man was cited and summonsed to Lynn District Court on charges of speeding, negligent operation of a vehicle, leaving the scene of property damage, possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Michael Dalo, a spokesperson for National Grid, said there were 618 customers affected by a power outage, with 339 customers having power restored within 30 minutes. The remaining 279 customers were without power for about four hours while crews made repairs.
On Wednesday, a piece of the broken pole was reinforced by being attached to a second pole.
