You know what I’ve been thinking? When Peabody football coach Mark Bettencourt said, “That has to be one of the best Peabody-Salem games in recent memory,” he wasn’t kidding.
Talk about a hard-fought, hard-earned victory – that was Friday night. The Tanners upped their record to a perfect 8-0 after defeating Salem (one loss heading in), 27-26.
Courtesy of Eli Batista, Jaden Roman, and Reyni Andino touchdowns, Peabody spooked the Witches on their home turf to jump ahead, 20-0, on Halloween weekend.
“If one of us is going to have a bad day, it’s good to know that another player can step up and get it done,” Bettencourt said.
All that said, great teams get tested, too. Salem stormed back to tie the game, but Roman (141 rushing yards) added another to regain the Tanners’ lead.
After another Salem touchdown, it all came down to a two-point conversion. The Witches’ run came up short, and Peabody completed its perfect regular season as time expired.
I repeat: a perfect regular season.
Tanners, good week.
