ROUNDUP: Big Blue, big-time performance from Groothuis

Mark Aboyoun

November 2, 2023 by Mark Aboyoun

The No. 12 Swampscott field hockey team defended home turf and advanced to the next round of the state tournament with a 2-0 win against No. 21 Dighton-Rehoboth.

Swampscott led at the break thanks to a goal from Northeastern Conference All-Star Sawyer Groothuis. The Big Blue had a corner and the ball was loose in front of the goal. Groothuis was quickest to react, and poked it home for the early cushion.

In the second half, it was Groothuis again finding the back of the net and sealing the game.

No. 12 Swampscott will travel to face No. 5 Foxborough with the time and date to be announced.

FIELD HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 1

Medfield 0

The No. 17 Spartans kept on rolling, upsetting No. 16 Medfield to advance to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive season.

When you have a strong defense and a good goalie, it’s hard to get beat. That was the case in this one as Gianna Tringale recorded another shutout. Vanessa Hall scored the lone goal.

St. Mary’s faces the winner of No. 1 Watertown and No. 32 Marlborough.

VOLLEYBALL

Wellesley 3

Peabody 1

In a 3-1 final, No. 17 Peabody couldn’t get by No. 16 Wellesley, closing the chapter on an impressive regular season for the Tanners, who finished with an 18-3 record.

Chicopee 3

Saugus 2

It was a hard-fought battle between two evenly-matched teams. Unfortunately for the No. 37 Sachems, their season has come to an end, losing in the fifth set, 15-10, to the No. 28 Pacers.
