LTE: Lynn’s Broadway project is necessary to improve pedestrian safety

To the editor

November 3, 2023 by To the editor

To the editor:

In the past few months with city officials, local business and neighbors weighed in on the merits and disadvantages of the Broadway Street project. Last week, I had an experience that solidified my support of this project. I was on my way to Lynnfield Street via Broadway and Jenness Street. While I was waiting to take the left turn from Broadway onto Jenness, I was aware that a young boy with a baseball glove in hand was trying to cross Jenness Street. He was standing on the curb to my left. With traffic constantly streaming from the direction of Peabody, drivers like myself waiting to make left turns onto Jenness and drivers coming down Jenness trying to turn right onto Broadway, he stood there confused and hesitant about when and how to cross the street. Drivers seemed more intent on their transit through this area than about this young pedestrian. Finally, the cars on Jenness stopped and I remained stopped.  Unfortunately, the traffic from the direction of Peabody continued to stream by. I finally caught the boy’s attention and let him know that it was safe to cross. This project is not about neighbors’ land rights or a fountain, it’s about pedestrians navigating this busy and dangerous intersection along with lots of drivers. It’s about safety.

Sincerely,

Iris Kimber

Lynn
