ROUNDUP: A MARBLEHEAD UPSET

Joey Barrett

November 3, 2023 by Joey Barrett

The Magicians began the season 0-4, then rattled off three straight wins to clinch the No. 14 seed in Division IV. With hopes of making even more noise – mission accomplished.

Marblehead defeated No. 3 Middleborough, 21-12, in enemy territory for a statement victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Magicians struck in the second with Finn Gallup finding Ryan Commoss for a 21-yard TD (7-0). Fast forward to the third. Colt Wales connected with Andy Palmer for a 4-yard touchdown (14-0).

Caiden Carriuolo returned an 82-yard punt for a touchdown to put the hosts on the board, but to no avail. After Middleborough possessed again in the fourth quarter, Julius Galante gave the Magicians the ball right back with a timely pass-breakup.

Gallup ran for an 8-yard touchdown (21-6), and Greg Motorny nailed all of his extra-point attempts.

Marblehead will travel to take on No. 6 Grafton in the Elite 8.

GIRLS SOCCER

Swampscott 2

Falmouth 1

Nothing got by goalie Eve Byrne, and Swampscott’s girls soccer team is onto the Round of 32 in Division III after defeating Falmouth, 2-0, Friday afternoon. The Big Blue travel to face Cardinal Spellman on Monday.

The first goal was an own-goal off Greta Siefken’s corner, but the second was a beauty. Hannah Fogg tucked one from Lyla Rogers, and that was all she wrote on Falmouth’s season.

BOYS SOCCER

Durfee 1

Peabody 0

In a “very even match” according to Peabody coach Stan McKeen, his Tanners fell, 1-0, bringing an end to their season.

“[We] had chances in the first half… unable to finish,” he said. “Durfee scored midway through the second half off a corner kick that hit the post and went in.”

Per McKeen, Dylan Flanagan, AJ Forte, and Lucas Silva all played strong games.

“[I’m] very proud of the way that Peabody played today and we never quit,” McKeen said. “We just couldn’t find the equalizer.”

KIPP 3

Turner Falls 1

KIPP advanced to the Round of 32 after defeating Turner Falls, 3-1, at Manning Field. The Panthers look to pounce again Monday at Ayer Shirley (6 p.m.).

Chicopee Comprehensive 1

Marblehead 0

After a 5-10-4 season and the No. 27 seed in Division II, Marblehead’s season came to a sharp close Friday. After its 1-0 victory, Chicopee faces Oliver Ames on Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL

Millbury 3

Lynn Tech 0

The Tigers fell in three sets, but what a fall it was. Lynn Tech finished its season 14-7, while Millbury moved on to face Joseph Case in the Round of 16.

Nipmuc 3

St. Mary’s 0

Unfortunately for the Spartans, one of their best seasons in program history came to a close Friday afternoon. St. Mary’s lost in straight sets against Nipmuc and finished the season with a 13-10 record.
