To the editor:
I am writing in reference to the homeless situation in Lynn. With winter months quickly approaching, I have concerns for this vulnerable population. I am asking for the city to look for ways to increase shelter availability for the homeless during these upcoming cold months. Lynn Shelter begins admitting homeless individuals for nightly stays beginning at 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The shelter operates on a first come, first serve basis. Individuals may be turned away when the shelters have reached capacity. I would ask to increase funding so emergency placement can be provided to these individuals who are left without placement for the night. Lynn Shelter operates 24 hours a day on weekends. It is important that homeless individuals have a place to shelter during the daytime hours during the week. I would ask for funding to increase shelter hours. People become homeless for various reasons. Each homeless individual has different needs, but they all have the basic need of shelter from the elements. Meeting the basic needs of the homeless includes shelter, food, water, basic hygiene, and clean warm clothing. Resources are essential for these individuals. Nightly placement is just the first step in a long journey to end homelessness.
Sincerely,
