In Tuesday’s municipal elections, Saugus, Lynn, and Peabody witnessed varying trends in voter participation. While Saugus saw increased turnout, Lynn experienced a substantial decrease, and Peabody saw a slight decline in the number of residents exercising their right to vote.
Saugus, according to the town’s website, reported a positive trend in voter participation. In 2021, a total of 4,056 voters showed up at the polling stations, representing 19.92% of the town’s registered voters. In 2023, Saugus recorded a higher voter turnout, with 5,055 residents participating in the local elections, which is 23.45% of the town’s eligible voters. This data reflects a 3.53% increase in the percentage of registered voters who participated in the elections compared to the figures from 2021.
Data obtained from the town administration showed that all 5,055 residents who voted cast ballots in the Board of Selectmen, School Committee, Charter Commission, and Housing Authority races.
In contrast, Lynn reported a decrease in voter turnout compared to the 2021 elections. This year, 9,382 residents exercised their right to vote, representing 15.6% of all eligible voters. This indicates a decline in voter participation from the 2021 elections, during which 12,839 registered voters participated, accounting for 23% of registered voters at the time.
Peabody also witnessed a dip in the amount of voters who came to the poll, albeit marginal in nature. In 2023, total voter turnout stood at 7,443, while in 2021, it amounted to 7,582. Additionally, the race that garnered the highest percentage of voter turnout was Ward 6 city councilor, in which 26.14% of registered voters cast their ballots. This percentage exceeded the average voter turnout across all races, which amounted to 18.44%.
