Christmas, especially for children, is a magic-filled time of year. But with sky-high inflation and rent prices flying high across the Commonwealth, some families are forced to prioritize basic necessities over holiday festivities.
Such is the case for one local resident, who said she’s struggling to juggle buying gifts for her two daughters with paying the bills. Furthermore, she has another child on the way.
“It’s been a hard year due to everything getting more expensive. The family has struggled to make ends meet with this year’s Christmas and I would really appreciate the help,” the woman said. “I was also blessed this year with a baby (who) will be born on Christmas Day.”
While struggling to stay financially afloat, this mother needs your help to hold a memorable and merry Christmas for her two daughters and her expected son.
That’s where Item Santa comes in. Now in its 57th year, the Item Santa Fund helps to make Christmas brighter for those in need. To donate, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, 85 Exchange St., Lynn, MA 01901.
Last year, The Item came close to its annual goal of raising $100,000 for those who need help staying afloat during the holiday season. If you have the means, please help Item Santa ensure that every family that celebrates Christmas can enjoy the holiday without fear of financial downfall.
Your donation will go a long way toward ensuring that this mother will not have to choose between keeping food on the table or toys under the tree when she returns from the hospital with her baby boy on Christmas Day.
“Even if it’s just one toy to make my babies happy this year, I would be grateful. Thank you and God bless,” the woman said.
Item Santa began in 1966 during President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. By the early 1970s, The Item began partnering with the Salvation Army. The Item solicited and collected the donations; the Salvation Army bought the toys and other items and distributed them to people in the Lynn area who met the eligibility requirements.
There is also a way to donate online through the Salvation Army at itemsanta.org. All donations are listed in Item print editions through the month of December and into 2024, along with a brief message from each donor if desired.
