Injured parent needs help from Item Santa

Joey Barrett

December 1, 2023 by Joey Barrett

Workplace injuries are no joke. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 2.6 million workplace injuries and illnesses reported by private employers in 2021. Fast forward to 2022, and it was 2.8 million.

The trend isn’t slowing down this year, either. The most common workplace injuries are slips, falls, roadway incidents, pedestrian vehicular incidents, and being compressed by equipment or objects.

The pandemic allowed a lot of people to work from home — but not everyone. People are out there every morning and every night, working for their loved ones through thick and thin.

One local parent recently became a victim.

“I need the help because I recently got injured at work,” she said. “Right now, I’m not able to work and earn the right amount of money. The only money I receive is to pay the bills and expenses.”

That’s not easy, either. The average household pays nine bills per month, with 14% of households delaying at least one bill per month, according to Doxo Insights.

“I don’t have enough money to buy toys for my daughter,” she said. “I’d really appreciate the help.”

Sixteen percent of parents would be willing to go into debt buying holiday gifts for their children, according to CNBC. Let’s make sure that won’t come to pass for this parent.

Now in its 57th year, the Item Santa Fund helps to make Christmas brighter for those in need. To donate, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, 85 Exchange St., Lynn, MA 01901.

The coupon can also be found online at this link: https://itemlive.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/page.pdf

All donations are listed in Item print editions through the month of December and into 2024, along with a brief message from each donor, if desired.

NOTE: The application period for aid from Item Santa has closed, and The Item does not process applicants. All questions about the program and distribution of gifts should be directed to the Salvation Army at 781-598-0673.
