Item Santa: Let’s help a few from Santa’s nice list

Joey Barrett

December 13, 2023 by Joey Barrett

We often hear the lyric, “He’s gonna find out who’s naughty or nice,” but sometimes, it’s hard to deliver what the nice kids deserve.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 6.3 million Americans are currently unemployed and the country’s unemployment rate (3.7%) is higher than it was in 2019 (3.4%).

One local mother of two boys (ages 3 and 5) is struggling to get gifts for her “wonderful kids.”

“Life has been very difficult for us — money is one of them,” she said. “Things are very expensive.”

It’s true. BHG.com states that the prices of eggs, butter, meat, and other everyday foods have been making grocery shopping “extra expensive” this year. According to Move.org, the average cost of groceries in America is $415.53 a month per person.

In particular, this mother wants to buy her two boys clothes and toys.

“I would appreciate it very much,” she said. “My boys are wonderful… I would like to get them something.”

Financialbestlife.com states that “the average family of four spends around $1,800 per year on clothes, with $388 of this on shoes.”

That said, let’s do our part in helping a few from Santa’s nice list.

Now in its 57th year, the Item Santa fund helps to make Christmas brighter for those in need. To donate, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, 85 Exchange St., Lynn, MA 01901.

There is also a way to donate online through the Salvation Army at http://itemlive.com/itemsanta

All donations are listed in Item print editions through the month of December and into 2024, along with a brief message from each donor, if desired.

NOTE: The application period for aid from Item Santa has closed and The Item does not process applicants. All questions about the program and distribution of gifts should be directed to the Salvation Army at 781-598-0673.
